What is Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)?

Dialectical behaviour therapy skills group program for adults

What DBT Looks Like at Wild Brain Therapies

DBT is an evidence-based therapeutic approach originally developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan.

At Wild Brain Therapies, we deliver DBT through a neuro-informed lens, integrating current neuroscience, trauma-responsive practices, and mind-body awareness.

The term dialectical refers to holding two truths at once, especially acceptance and change.

This dialectic helps clients and therapists move out of stuck or rigid emotional patterns and into more flexible, resilient responding.

DBT is also behavioural, meaning we work collaboratively to observe what is happening in the brain and body, identify patterns that no longer serve you, and build skills that support

regulated, values-aligned action.

Most importantly, DBT is therapy, a structured, supportive process that helps individuals understand their nervous system, strengthen emotional resilience, and build a life that feels more manageable and fulfilling.

Why DBT Is Effective

DBT is one of the most well-researched treatments for chronic emotion dysregulation, especially for symptoms related to Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), complex trauma, and persistent emotional intensity. Controlled clinical trials show DBT reduces self-harm, impulsive behaviours, and emotional overwhelm, while improving stability, relationships, and quality of life.

Wild Brain Therapies expands on this evidence-base by adding neuroeducation, polyvagal-informed regulation practices, and somatic tools that support long-term integration and healing.

The Neuro-Informed foundation of DBT

Traditional DBT is grounded in the idea that emotion dysregulation arises from the interaction of biological sensitivity and invalidating environments. Wild brain therapies neuro-informed approach builds on this by helping clients understand: how their nervous system processes stress, what triggers fight/flight/freeze/fawn states, how early experiences shape brain-body patterns, and how to create new neural pathways that support

emotional balance. The goal is not just behaviour change, it’s deep nervous-system safety, increased self-compassion, and improved capacity for connection and resilience. Clients learn to understand their emotional experiences, shift unhelpful patterns, and increase emotional resilience. We pair DBT’s core strategies with neuro-education to help clients recognise emotional cues earlier and recover more quickly.

Weekly Individual Therapy:

One-on-one support focused on skill application, emotional regulation, and nervous-system awareness.

Weekly DBT Skills Group:

Delivered in modules, integrating traditional DBT skills with neuro-psychoeducation. Groups are structured like a class: a leader teaches the skills, assigns practice exercises (homework), and guides participants in bringing these tools into real-world situations. groups meet weekly and it takes around 24- 30 weeks to cover the full skills curriculum. This cycle is often repeated, creating just over a year-long program.

The DBT skills:

  • Mindfulness Skills

Mindfulness is the foundation of all DBT skills. We help clients learn to notice thoughts, sensations, and emotions without judgment, while also understanding what is happening in the brain and nervous system during emotional activation.

  • Middle Path Skills

Middle Path skills help clients balance acceptance and change. We teach validation, dialectical thinking, and flexible responding through the lens of neurobiology, understanding how cognitive rigidity or black-and-white thinking shows up in the brain and body.

  • Distress Tolerance Skills

Distress Tolerance teaches how to safely navigate crises or emotional overwhelm without resorting to behaviours that create more suffering. We integrate sensory-based and somatic strategies that help soothe the nervous system.

  • Emotion Regulation Skills

Clients learn to understand their emotional experiences, shift unhelpful patterns, and increase emotional resilience. We pair DBT’s core strategies with neuroeducation to help clients recognize emotional cues earlier and recover more quickly.

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills

These skills support clients in expressing needs, navigating boundaries, and managing conflict in relationships while staying regulated and grounded.

Phone Coaching :

Brief supports between sessions to help clients apply skills during moments of distress.

Therapist Consultation & Clinical Collaboration:

Our clinicians participate in regular consultation to ensure fidelity to DBT principles while integrating current neuroscience and trauma-responsive practices.
